I was reading your blog and your BNOB. I thought of two books that you might like to read. One is "The Endurance" about the Shaklee expedition across Antartica (they didn't make it). They were stranded for over a year without one death and no mutiny. It is a fabulous story. If you don't have time to read the book, the documentary narrated by Liam Neison was really good. We rented it at Blockbuster.
Another book/even that happened around the same time (early 1900s) is "The River of Doubt". It is about Teddy Roosevelt's trip down an uncharted river in the Amazon. Also a really good book.
Another non-fiction that is fabulous is "The Emperor's of Chocolate." It is about the Hershey's and Mars corporations. Those are all books that have really stuck with me over the years.
"Isaac's Storm" was pretty good. It is about the hurricane in Galveston in the early 1900s.
That was way more than 2 books!

All good recommendations. I've read #1 (Shackleton), #2 (Millard's River of Doubt, and #4 (Isaac's Storm). I'll look into the Emperors of Chocolate.
BTW, there are some excellent children's story versions of Shackleton's story.

We have one of those children's stories of the Endurance. It was very good. Maybe an Usborne book? I can't remember. The Emperors of Chocolate is a great book to read around the Valentine's and Easter Holidays since there is Chocolate galore!
